Description Detail photograph of Marsyas, a sculpture created by Balthasar Permoser displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. From the museum's text description: 'Permoser was a Bavarian born sculptor active in Austria, Italy and Germany. This work was probably carved (marble) in Rome, ca. 1680Marsyas had the audacity to challenge Apollo to a musical duel, Marsyas playing his pipes and Apollo his viol. After Marsyas lost, Apollo flayed him alive. The bust was meant to be seen in a niche, probably outdoors and perhaps with Apollo as a pendant.'
